Stark Facts:

• Only 20.2% of children in Grade 3 children could do 2-digit subtraction 2016.

• 26% of children in Grade 5 could do grade relevant division. (ASER, 2016)

• 90% of children study Liberal Arts courses and are not confident to take up Science courses because they are not proficient in Maths.

If this is the state of numeracy levels in the country, how can we expect the next engineer/doctor/teacher/scientist etc. to come from rural India?

This is the 3rd year of our math programme that has been implemented in 6 districts across north Karnataka - Ganitha Kalika Andolana. The main objective of the programme is to make math a fun subject and one that's easy to learn, with emphasis on activity-based learning!

Now how do we ensure/check whether learning is on a positive curve? By ASSESSING the children, regularly. Akshara Foundation needs to raise Rs. 10,00,000/- to get this project off the ground, starting with 100 Tabs.

For this, we plan to give the head of every School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) an electronic Tab for his/her school. They will, in turn, get the children assessed using an APP (specifically designed for this assessment) preloaded on the Tab, with help from our Education Volunteers. The app is preloaded with math problems. Once a child enters his/her name and grade, the app throws up problems one after the other in random order, like an online test.

Once they finish, the app stores the child’s performance data locally till the Tab is connected to the Internet. Post which, the data gets transferred to our servers. We use this data to show parents how their children are performing; go to elected representatives to show them how their cluster/block is performing and overall, help in increasing the level of education.

To start with, Akshara Foundation needs to raise Rs. 10,00,000/- to fund around 100 Tabs. Join the Andolana that’s working towards every child being in school and LEARNING WELL, and be an integral part of this movement.

About Ganitha Kalika Andolana(GKA) :  GKA is a math programme designed to remove the fear of math in children by shifting paradigms from the traditional rote-based method of learning to an activity-based method. What does this mean? If children learn in groups or with activities surrounding a particular concept, it becomes less of a feared subject and more fun for them.
